Doug on “To Tell the Truth”

Today’s post is an absolute and unique delight. On May 20, 1974, Doug appeared on the venerable game show “To Tell The Truth,” and it’s hard to believe how unknown he was at the time.

Aired eight days before “The Magic Show” opened on Broadway, this was a pre-internet age where if you didn’t have a local paper handy you probably wouldn’t know who Doug was. Or what he looked like for that matter. As you’ll see, it’s a lot of fun watching the panel try to figure out which of the three Dougs is the genuine article.

I’m airing the episode as a whole, though Doug only appears in the first half and during the closing credits. Be sure to stay for “Metamorphosis” with Dale Soules serving as his assistant.

Special Thanks to Joe Fox and Bill Goodwin

Thanks Neil, I’ve been looking for this recording. Good clean copy.
We taped this at the end of April, just after Grover gave the show its name. Bill Cullen told us, off air, he saw Doug and Dale do Metamorphosis in Central Park in the tribute to Houdini.
Doug is wearing costumes from Spellbound. The green one was his main wardrobe. The one he came out of the Metamorphosis in was his Silver-Bullett costume.
