Well, today is my 1,000th post. I know right? When I think about that I’ve posted on this site 1,000 times, it’s a little mind boggling. But, Doug has always been worth the effort, and it’s an honor to do it whenever I can. Here’s to another 1,000!
Anyway, I recently came across this behind the scenes photo of Ivan Reitman (seated, far right) directing the “Merlin” TV commercial. I love this photo for many reasons, but I think mainly it shows the intensity of the show’s production, and the multitude of performers and artists that brought it to life.
In fact, standing at the far left is Jim Steinmeyer who was Doug’s protege and lead designer. Since then, his work has become legendary as a magic designer and author. He was even one of my very first interviews for this very website.
As for the commercial itself, it’s become one of only a handful filmed segments we have of the show. Which is a shame really, because as you can see below, it was a real feast for the senses.
Thank you! I am grateful to @MrMagicbyMax, John Harrison, and Neil McNally because I hadn’t seen that early, minimal commercial in years, maybe since 1982 when it aired. Wonderful!
Thanks for posting this! Great to see.
