Close Encounters of the Doug Kind

One of the great parts of running this website are the stories I have been sent via e-mail or Facebook from people that knew Doug. These first hand accounts really open him up in a way that magazine articles, You Tube clips, or books can not.  So, for part of the week I’d like to share some of them with you.

The first comes from Wayne Wissner

“I was around 15 years old when I first met Doug at an Abbott Get-together.  I think I was around 15 years old.  One night after the shows were over and the American Legion had closed down, Doug, Denny Loomis and myself went to the only place we knew for sure was still open, the local laundromat.

I don’t know how many hours we stayed there showing each other card effects.  Denny was more advanced than either of us, but we still had a great time.  I was the first one to leave as I still had to find my way back to the house where I was staying with several other guys. Don’t know how late Doug and Denny stayed, but I didn’t see either of them (until) early the next day.

Doug and I talked several times during that Get-together and we corresponded when it was over.  The last time I heard from him was when he was doing “The Magic Show” on Broadway and he sent me a Christmas card.”

Thank you Wayne for sharing.
