The above newspaper article comes from December of 1973. For anyone else that date may not mean much, but for all the Doug fans out there this is the month and year that “Spellbound” premiered.
Doug, assisted by Maya, displays the well known “Zig-Zag” to bemused reporter George Anthony. Now I’ve gone into “Spellbound” in greater detail before, but these two pictures really bring us back to the excitement that Doug really seemed to want for the show.
Produced and Directed by Ivan Reitman, the show premiered at the Royal Alexandra Theater during the 1973 Christmas season. While the show itself wasn’t very memorable and had numerous issues, it was seen by Broadway producers Edgar Lansbury and Joe Beruh…and the rest as they say is history.
Spellbound was standing room only for the whole run of the production. It broke all house audience records for the Royal Alexandra Theatre. This show sold Doug Henning and his magic to Broadway.
