Original 1973/74 “Spellbound” Newspaper Listing

It goes without saying that without the show “Spellbound,” there would be no Doug Henning. Directed by Ivan Reitman over the 1973 holiday season, the show’s story has since been lost to time.

However, it featured a youthful and exuberant Doug who caught the eyes of Broadway producers, Edgar Landsbury and Joe Beruh. Broadway soon came calling, and the rest they say is “Magic Show” history.

  1. I was at one of the first showings of Spellbound. My dad had row 2 or 3 on the isle. That seat changed my life. Prior to the show my dad introduced me to the legendary Johnny Giordmaine and the president of the Society of Canadian Magicians. My dad got me an invite to join before the show even began. I was mesmerized during the show but what really changed my life was being invited on stage for Metamorphosis. I was sitting on the isle and was chosen either by chance or a previous arrangement by my dad. I’ll never know. I eventually built my own trunk and performed it professionally during my 30 years as a professional magician. Doug truly had a magical influence on my life. When he died, the CBC(I think), came to my home and shot a segment for his obituary. I showed the program he signed and performed the coins across with Canadian silver dollars, just has he had on one of his magic specials.
