Today’s post comes from musician Paul Shaffer of David Letterman and comedy fame, among other things.
Appearing on Marc Maron’s popular “WTF Podcast,” Schaffer recalls his career and how he’s gotten to where he is today. However, an unexpected story along the way is how Shaffer spent a year as the bandleader in the original Broadway production of “The Magic Show.” As you would expect, funny anecdotes abound from Schaffer as they discuss the show itself, as well as Doug going on a date with Gilda Radner.
According to the Broadway musicians, Paul came into the room, sat down at the piano and blew everybody’s socks off. Hum a few bars and he finished the tune in any key or rhythm. He knew all the obscure stuff and the classics.
