“Merlin” Times Square Billboard

“Join the Crowds who are Cheering!”

So started this billboard that hung above Times Square in the early 80s. If it wasn’t evident already, “Merlin” was heavily promoted during its relatively short run on Broadway. There was a lot on the line and at stake for Doug’s second appearance on Broadway, and the producers weren’t taking any chances by the looks of it. Being the largest billboard on the block certainly helped.

Times Square has changed a lot in the years since this photo was taken. None of the businesses or billboards in this photo still remain. However, the one immovable  constant seems to always be the TKTS discounted ticket booth. It’s still holding fort almost 40 years later!
