In the year and a half that I have been running this site, I have published A LOT of pictures of Doug and his career. But, the one featured above is one I had never seen before. It features Doug and his assistant, then girlfriend Mars Barrick, in a publicity still from the early 70s.
Other than his sister Nancy, Mars was Doug’s first professional assistant and was there for many of his early successes. After their partnership dissolved, she would go on to form another magic double act with another of Doug’s assistants, Maya. So, wherever you are today Mars, “The Doug Henning Project” tips its hat to you in appreciation.

I saw Henning and Mars perform at Center Island in Toronto in the early 70s. It was a free show for kids.Probably before he became famous.

I travelled around the East Coast of Canada with Doug and Mars in the early 70s. I was hitchhiking and they picked me up in their VW van. I squeezed in amongst all their paraphernalia. Doug and Mars were very kind and hospitable. They put me in charge of keeping their rabbit happy while they drove. I’d never heard of them but was very impressed by their stories and vision. Years later, I wasn’t surprised to read of their success. RIP Doug. Blessings, Mars wherever you are.
