Now everyone in Doug Henning’s “World of Magic” knows what a Wonder Whim is. What you don’t? Well here’s one in its original box.

While doing research for the site, I recently stumbled across this gem of 1980s nostalgia tucked safely behind a nearby desk. I’ve talked about Doug’s failed venture into the toy market before, but never had I actually laid my eyes on one before. This was like finding a pastel and neon colored Bigfoot, The Ark of the Covenant, and Santa Claus all in one place!

Each Wonder Whim was designed by Debby Henning (who studied at the Cooper Union art school in NYC). As you can see from above, they also came with a book and kaleidoscope wand. I didn’t get a chance to examine the contents of the box, but I assume they were still buried within this unlikely time capsule of consumerism.

The only 2 Wonder Whims I didn’t get were the fish & the butterfly ones. I have all 4 others, still in boxes (although they are weathered) with the contents inside New & Never played with. Everything is there! My kids always wanted to play with them as my now grandchildren do as well. In the box they’ll stay until I decide to give to my adult children.
