A Lost Doug Illusion?

This request recently found its way to me from Doug fan Michael Ketchum regarding a potentially “lost” Doug illusion that needs identifying. If you have any information please contact Michael directly at the email address below.

Doug Henning Monkey Box Illusion - Michael Grandinetti Archive

I AM THE CURRENT OWNER OF AN ILLUSION NAMED “THE MONKEY BOX ILLUSION” – WHICH WAS SOLD TO ME WITH THE PROVENANCE THAT IT (ILLUSION) WAS BUILT BY JOHN GAUGHAN FOR USE BY DOUG HENNING IN “DOUG’S WORLD OF MAGIC” TOUR.

THE TRICK WAS TO DISPLAY ALL SIDES OF A 3 FT. TALL RECTANGULAR CABINET ON METAL LEGS WITH A SEMI-CIRCLE SHAPE AT THE TOP – DOORS ON THE FRONT & BACK OPENED TO SHOW IT EMPTY – A SMALLER DOOR AT THE TOP WAS OPENED AND A MONKEY, CLAD IN A TUXEDO WAS PRODUCED.  THE FRONT/BACK & SIDES ARE BLUE WITH ORIGINAL PAINTINGS OF A SALVADORE DALI STYLE SURREAL SUBJECT MATTER DOMINATED BY A LARGE TOP HAT ON THE DOORS CENTER. I EVEN HAVE 2 MONKEY TUXEDOS INCLUDED.  I’VE POURED OVER THE INTERNET & FOUND NOTHING.

IF ANYONE KNOWS OF THIS UNUSUAL ILLUSION/CABINET/DEVICE AND CAN VERIFY:

1. THAT DOUG ACTUALLY PERFORMED IT IN ANY SHOWS

2. WAS IT INDEED BUILT BY JOHN GAUGHAN?

Please email Michael Ketcham at:  MKETCHAM2655@ATT.NET

Special thanks to Michael Grandinetti for graciously supplying the photo.

The I bought this from the Henning auction in 1988

It was built by Willy Kennedy
The paint job was in dire condition and I had to repaint it and I used it for my own magic ad for eight years

Was used on the Henning tour fist with Penguins which was too hard to handle then with a monkey the monkey had a tux

I seen in on stage in Denver in a 1983 Doug Henning show.
