Vancouver Sun 6/20/73: Lighthouse Article w/Doug as Opening Act

The article below comes from the June 20th, 1973 edition of “The Vancouver Sun.”

What’s fascinating about it is that Doug isn’t even the focus of the article. It’s the band Lighthouse. In his early days, Doug would pair up as the opening act for numerous Canadian bands. Lighthouse being one of them. It was a way to get himself out there, and hopefully get noticed.

Doug gets a pretty good write up here (minus some grumblings from unhappy Lighthouse fans). It goes without saying that in a few years time, Doug Henning was on more people’s minds than some of the bands he played with.

Great piece of information on what Doug was doing to build his career just before we created Spellbound.

I saw Doug open for Lighthouse in Thunder Bay on that 1973 tour. He was unexpected certainly but got a good reception and he was great.

Less than great was that Bob McBride was in the throes of heroin addiction at the time and couldn’t make it on stage with the band, leaving the band to handle vocals themselves, especially Skip Prokop.
