The above photo is a screen grab from Doug’s segment on “Life Styles of the Rich and Famous” in 1986, and features his Santa Monica warehouse and workshop.
Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of this city, buildings over time get torn down and disappear altogether. Well, not this building. Michael Grandinetti was kind enough to send me the current interior of Doug’s once magical abode.
VOILA! Behold the “Westside Food Bank!, a charitable organization that today provides food to social services on the Westside of Los Angeles. If there’s any doubts that this is the original building, all you have to do is look at the roof in both pictures.
Somehow I think Doug would be happy with what now occupies this most magical of places!
Special Thanks to Michael Grandinetti for locating the site of Doug’s workshop as the Westside Food Bank.
In the 70s he had his workshop in Van Nuys on Valjean, just down the street from where ILM was founded and where they did all the effects for the original Star Wars. A magical street indeed!
