“The Magic Show’s” 49th Anniversary

I’d be remiss in not mentioning that today is the 49th anniversary of the premiere of “The Magic Show.” It goes without saying that the show itself continues to live in the hearts and minds of Doug and magic fans everywhere.

It’s a special show indeed, and one that is worthy of a revival. Whether that happens or not is anyone’s guess, but it’s importance in Broadway history is undeniable. It made a massive star out of a young Doug Henning, and reenergized Broadway in a way never seen before.

So, wherever you are today, take a moment and give a little toast to Doug Henning and “The Magic Show!”

May 28, 1974, after the show.
We were all sitting around Sardis’ restaurant looking at the caricatures on the walls waiting for the last edition revues to come out.
Newspaper after tabloid – none of the publishers knew what they were writing about. No matter what they said in the other papers, only the Times counted.
The New York Times was the last to come out. Clive Barnes gave his opinion of the work from a Broadway point of view. Then he reviewed the new young magician. “Doug Henning is terrific… He is the best magician I have ever seen… I want to see more magic… I’m going back to see it again.”
    And he did.
