The Chip Romero Collection: “Hendoo” Business Card

unnamed-8

We all have to come from somewhere don’t we?

Featured above, is an exceptional find in the history of Doug Henning. You see, way, way before Doug Henning was Doug Henning, he was “The Astounding Hendoo!”

For more on this early phase in Doug’s career, here’s an except from John Harrison’s 2009 biography on Doug’s life and work:

“While limited to the resources of a typical teenager, Doug approached his magic like a business. Unable to hire a professional assistant, he relied on the good graces of his sister Nancy…for onstage help. Thinking a name would make him sound more professional, Doug brainstormed with Nancy for a more “magician-sounding” name. He ended up taking the “Hen” from “Henning” and the “Do” from “Doug” to create “Hendoo.” Pleased with his new stage name, he had a batch of business cards printed with “THE ASTOUNDING HENDOO in bold letters across the face.”

Special Thanks to Chip Romero

Interestingly, it looks like (according to Google maps) his old house may still be standing. It appears that most of the other houses on that street have been torn down and replaced with larger, newer houses. The house does appear to be updated, but maybe it is the same house that he lived in back then. Might want to grab a pic of it while you still can.
